AI Lead Qualification — How to Filter tire-kickers from Buyers Before They Waste Your Time
70% of your DM inquiries are tire-kickers. They ask "how much?", you respond, and they disappear. They ask "do you have this in stock?", you respond, and they go to your competitor. They ask 15 questions over 3 days and never buy. Your human sales team spends 40% of their time on conversations that will never convert. That is 40% of their time wasted.
AI lead qualification solves this: the AI asks the qualifying questions in the first 2-3 messages, filters the tire-kickers from the real buyers, and only hands off to a human when the lead is qualified. Your humans stop wasting time on tire-kickers and start closing deals.
I am the founder of OT1-Pro, and this is the lead qualification framework that works in DMs — not the form-based qualification that kills conversations.
Why traditional lead qualification fails in DMs
Traditional lead qualification is built for forms and phone calls: "What is your budget?" "What is your timeline?" "Who is the decision maker?" This works in a phone call because the conversation is synchronous. In a DM, this kills the conversation. Nobody wants to answer 8 questions before they even know what you are selling.
The DM lead qualification framework is different: it is conversational, it happens naturally, and it does not feel like an interrogation.
The 5-question DM qualification framework
These five questions, asked naturally over 2-3 messages, qualify a lead in DMs:
Question 1: "What are you looking for?"
This is the first question the AI asks after the greeting. It is open-ended and conversational. The answer tells you:
- Is this person a serious buyer (specific product) or a tire-kicker (general browsing)?
- What product are they interested in?
- What is their use case?
Serious buyer response: "I'm looking for a 3-seater sofa in blue."
Tire-kicker response: "Just browsing" or "What do you have?"
Question 2: "What's your budget range?"
Asked after the customer shows interest in a specific product. The AI phrases it as a range, not an exact number: "Most customers in your situation spend between EGP 5,000-10,000. Does that fit your budget?" This makes it easy to answer and does not feel invasive.
Serious buyer response: "Around EGP 7,000-8,000."
Tire-kicker response: "I'm not sure" or no response.
Question 3: "When do you need this?"
This qualifies urgency. A customer who needs it today is more likely to buy than one who is "just looking."
Serious buyer response: "I need it by Friday."
Tire-kicker response: "No rush" or "Whenever."
Question 4: "Have you tried anything else?"
This reveals competitors and objections. If they are already using a competitor, the AI can address the switching cost. If they have not tried anything, the AI can focus on education.
Serious buyer response: "I tried [competitor] but it was too expensive."
Tire-kicker response: "No, just looking."
Question 5: "What would make this the right choice for you?"
This is the closing question. It reveals the final objection and gives the AI (or human) the exact information needed to close.
Serious buyer response: "If you can match the price and deliver by Friday."
Tire-kicker response: "I need to think about it" with no specific concern.
How to implement this in your AI
The AI asks these five questions naturally, not as a checklist. Here is how a real conversation flows:
- Customer: "Hey, I'm interested in your sofas."
- AI: "Hey! Great choice. What are you looking for — a specific style or size?" (Question 1)
- Customer: "A 3-seater in blue."
- AI: "Nice — we have the BlueLine 3-seater at EGP 8,500. Most customers in your situation spend EGP 5,000-10,000. Does that fit your budget?" (Question 2)
- Customer: "That's in my range."
- AI: "Perfect! When do you need it?" (Question 3)
- Customer: "By Friday."
- AI: "We can do that — delivery to Cairo is free. What would make this the right choice for you?" (Question 5)
- Customer: "If you can throw in the cushions."
Five questions, three messages, and the lead is qualified. If this is a serious buyer, the AI hands off to a human closer with full context. If it is a tire-kicker, the AI continues nurturing until the lead is ready.
The tire-kicker signals (and what the AI does with them)
The AI identifies tire-kickers by these signals:
- "Just browsing" — no specific product interest. The AI continues nurturing with product highlights.
- "What do you have?" — no specific need. The AI asks qualifying questions to narrow down.
- No response after 2 messages — the lead is not engaged. The AI sends a follow-up in 24 hours.
- "I'll think about it" with no specific concern — no urgency. The AI sends a follow-up with a time-limited offer.
- Asks 5+ questions without showing buying intent — information gathering, not buying. The AI continues nurturing.
Tire-kickers are not bad leads — they are leads that are not ready yet. The AI nurtures them with relevant content until they are ready to buy. When they are ready, they come back to a conversation that already has context.
Score the lead, do not just label it
"Tire-kicker" and "buyer" are two buckets, but most leads sit somewhere in the middle. Instead of forcing each conversation into a bucket, score it from 0-100 using the five questions above:
- Specific product named: up to +20 points. "The 3-seater in blue" is a signal; "cheap stuff" is not.
- Budget range given: up to +20 points. A concrete range beats "I'm not sure" every time.
- Deadline or event: up to +20 points. "I need it by Friday" is urgency; "whenever" is noise.
- Competitor context: up to +15 points. Someone already comparing is actively buying.
- Conversation quality: up to +25 points. Rapid replies, specific follow-ups, and no ghosting after 2 messages.
Then the routing rule is simple:
- Score 0-35: keep nurturing with product highlights and relevant content. Do not waste a human on it.
- Score 36-70: hand to a human with the scoring breakdown and the conversation attached. This is a real lead that needs one good conversation.
- Score 71-100: route directly to a closer with a draft reply attached. These are the leads where minutes decide the sale — treat them like a phone call, not an inbox.
The scoring does not replace the five questions — it is what they feed into. Your human closer opens a conversation knowing not just "this is a lead" but why it scored the way it did, which is exactly the context you want before you type the first reply.
The numbers that prove it works
- Human time on unqualified leads: Down 60-70%. Humans stop talking to tire-kickers and start talking to buyers.
- Conversion rate on qualified leads: Up 40-60%. When humans only talk to qualified leads, the conversion rate on those leads goes up dramatically.
- Total sales per day: Up 25-40%. More qualified leads + faster response times = more sales.
- Cost per sale: Down 30-50%. Less time wasted on unqualified leads means lower cost per sale.

Bottom line
70% of your DM inquiries are tire-kickers. AI lead qualification filters them from real buyers in the first 2-3 messages. Your human closers stop wasting time on conversations that will never convert and start closing deals with qualified leads. The result: 25-40% more sales, 30-50% lower cost per sale.
The framework takes 2 hours to implement. The ROI is measurable in the first week.
